It takes less than 10 seconds for you to make a good first impression on someone. That’s about the same amount of time that it takes for the threshold of your one, two, or three-bedroom dwelling at Lafayette Garden Apartments to make an impression as well. Doormats are the most common accessory used outside the home. They are functional, decorative, and can provide safety. The term was coined in the mid-1600’s. Judging from that fact, people have been using mats to welcome visitors, and themselves, into their habitats for close to 400 years. Keeping dirt, moisture, and debris outside your home’s interior is the primary function of a doormat. They are used to wipe and/or clean the bottom of shoes and feet so that the majority of grime stays outside. Keeping dirt outside means the flooring, whether it be tile, wood, or carpeting, stays clean. Having the soles of your shoes dried on the mat provides the safety of not slipping. It was customary in Biblical times to offer water and a basin so travelers could wash the dust from their feet. Doormats are the modern-day equivalent of offering the cleansing of your tootsies. Doormats were usually made of straw or vines. Rubber, plastic, and textiles that could be woven with patterns are all materials still used to form a mat that could be placed at the entrance to your home to welcome someone. Hence the name welcome mat in today’s marketplace. Decorative doormats can say a range of things besides “welcome”. Images, colors, materials, sayings, and shapes are all things that go into consideration when selecting a welcome mat for outside your door. The most common inexpensive welcome mat is a rectangle of black rubber that has raised ribs to aid in getting the dirt off your shoes and says “welcome” smack dab in the middle. Variations of that mat include a sisal and rubber version with “welcome” running through the middle in red, teal, or black. There are round versions of the traditional welcome mat and versions with welcome in just about any language you may speak. Have a favorite sports team? Fan Mats are popular so you can root, root, root for the home team and let anyone who comes in contact with your door know who you want to win in an instant. Are you an animal lover? You can find welcome mats with horses, cats, butterflies, and just about any breed of dog. One mat is die cut in the shape of a whale and shows a love of puns with “whale-come” written across the bottom. Humorous sayings are incredibly popular and enable you to share a smile with your visitors and neighbors. Do any of things bring a smile if you were to read them on a welcome mat: “Hi. I’m Mat.”, “Come back when you have a warrant”, “Well, butter my butt and call me a biscuit, look who’s here”, “Nice underwear”, or “Welcome. Beware of Husband. Kids are Shady. Wife is Cool.” According to an online home shopping site, the best selling funny mat simply says, “Leave”. Monogrammed mats with a single letter and made-to-order mats of the occupants last name are extremely popular. Mats that reflect the occupants' identity was a much-requested holiday gift in 2017. Summertime begs for you to join in this outdoor cooking delight. Here are some basic things you need to grill like a pro: Food for the Grill What do you want to cook? Meat eater and vegetarian can find some great choices this time of year. Corn, cauliflower, eggplant, beef, fish, chicken…it’s all great on the grill. Concentrate on preparing one thing and making it great rather than dealing with an assortment that will need different temperatures and times on the pit. Especially being a beginner, keep your barbecue choices to a few select food items. Side Dishes You will need fixings and side dishes to make your meal complete. Baked beans, potato salad, and garlic bread are traditional favorites that you can make yourself or purchase at a local deli or grocery store. Many guests love to help. Enlist them to bring a side dish and don’t forget dessert. The Sauce Battles rage among family and friends about the best barbecue sauce to use for the perfect flavor. Choices range from sweet to spicy, tangy to fruity, and tomato or veggie free…whatever your palate desires, you can find a sauce to suit its demands. Check out local farmers and craft markets to find delicious homemade sauces. Cannot decide on one for the whole group? That’s okay. Get a variety of sauces and hold an impromptu tasting. Cooking Surface / Techniques Are you using an electric grill, charcoal pit, or gas grill? Consider your surface and make certain you have the correct type of tools and surface accessories you will need as you cook. Aluminum foil, a few shallow pans, and cooking spray are three things that just about any outside cook find handy to have available to them. Safety Make certain that you have water for extinguishing any stray flames and hot pads for handling things right off of the grill. Prior planning will help keep you incident free. Cleaning Up Make sure you have trash bags, grill brushes, and mild cleansing detergent to get your grill back in good shape. Don’t make the mistake of thinking you can wait to clean up the mess the next time you grill by burning off any residue left behind. Experts agree it’s best to let the grill surface cool and wipe down before the next use. Friends and Family Make sure you’ve invited a variety of people that will make your cookout fun and interesting. Bonding can occur over the grill as you share cooking techniques and preferences on the type of food you prepare. If you are like most people in the South, before you’ve finished the meal being shared that day, you are already planning what you will be barbecuing in weeks to come. If you are looking for a place to live that has grill ready areas and space that allows for versatile outdoor living, check out The Garden Apartments in Lafayette, LA. One, two, and three-bedroom units are available and move-in summer specials can help you relocate with ease. The average move into a two-bedroom apartment requires 50 boxes. What can you do with all those leftover moving boxes? Here are some suggestions on how you can reuse and/or recycle. Storage: There might be some things that are seasonal or some things that you won’t be using all that often. Keep a few boxes to stow away things in the closet until you are ready to use them. Emergency Supplies: In Louisiana, it is a great idea to have a Hurricane Season Emergency Supply box. Take one or two of your boxes and pack them with the things that you may need for any type of emergency. Keep one box in your home and the other in your vehicle. Craft Projects: Boxes make great bases for frames, decorative containers, and surfaces to work on to protect furniture if you are the crafty type. Look online for ideas of how to transform potential trash into treasures. Craft and hobby shops are great resources for step-by-step instructions on converting boxes into projects. Planters: Cardboard is decomposable, and most boxes can bring you through an entire growing season. Poke holes for drainage and fill with dirt and plants. You can spiff up a plain brown box by stenciling the name of the herbs or flowers it contains on the outside. Or, wrap a piece of raffia, rope, or ribbon and tie in a jaunty bow. At the end of the growing season, when your box is breaking down, use it as compost. Kid Projects: Build forts inside or out with empty boxes. Lightweight but durable and hours of fun. Fort not your child’s style? Then, build their dream playhouse. Whether castle yellow submarine or hot air balloon, let their imagination (and yours) be the architect of a play dwelling they will remember. Colored chalk can be utilized to draw on open boxes for inside cardboard sidewalk art when it may be raining outside. Roads can easily be drawn on boxes to make tracks for play vehicles that get numerous smiles to the gallon. Have a staircase inside? Let the kids use boxes to turn those steps into a slide. Make sure you take a turn too. Costumes: Halloween isn’t that far away. Hold onto boxes to make great costumes that don’t require wearing masks or make-up or much effort to construct. Be a pair of dice, turn yourself into a robot, a Rubik’s cube, or a Lego block. For a truly whimsical costume, be a piece of modern art. Donate: Bring empty boxes to missions, food banks, and thrift stores where donations are a staple. These organizations can never have too many containers to use to distribute and to store. Recycling Bins: Put three boxes in your laundry room, pantry, or closet and use them to sort plastics, glass, and newspapers. When full, haul to the nearest recycling center or to the curb if your community offers curbside recycling services pickups. Moving Companies: National and local moving companies will many times purchase gently used packing containers. Haven’t made a move but looking to soon? You can also infuse water with cucumber slices and your favorite herb for a refreshing treat. Vegetables that are in abundance in early summer are zucchini, yellow squash, tomatoes, onions, carrots, celery, and green beans. The dog days of summer is that time when the temperatures soar. The Romans labeled this hot summer period after Sirius, the Dog Star, that is the brightest of stars in the Canis Major (Large Dog) constellation. Since Sirius was bright and located near the sun, it was believed to be responsible for causing hot weather. In the 1800’s, temperatures could be so brutal in the summer that it was considered a time when dogs grew mad, other animals became weak, and humans would suffer from fevers and hysterics. The dog days of summer can still cause hysterics of sorts when looking for a new home for you and your pet. A few things to consider when looking for a new pet-friendly apartment.

Lists are made for all types of things. There are grocery lists, vacation packing lists, party planning lists, and bucket lists of things that a person wants to do before their life is over. Making a list to help you find the apartment of your dreams may sound unnecessary but it can help you focus on the things that are truly important to you that you may not have realized until you wrote it down. Start with some basics to write your list. Type it into your phone so it will be with you if someone is helping you in your search include them in the list-making process, gather around a laptop or go old-school with pen and paper. It doesn’t matter how you write it down, just that you do. Brainstorm everything that you want in an apartment. You may think things like adequate parking for everyone in the complex is a given but when you start looking at spaces you may find that isn’t always the case. Don’t judge the list yet. Just write down everything you can think of that you would like to find in an apartment. Here are a few things that make most lists: the number of bedrooms needed, the number of bedrooms desired, number of parking spaces needed, whether the unit can be upstairs or downstairs, does the apartment allow pets, how much are deposits, am I okay with neighbors with children, do I want to live in a gated community and is the location suited to the type of commute I am willing to make to work or school? Some things that also might make your list: is their great food delivery in this area, is cable/internet connection possible or included, what type of lease will I have to sign and am I willing to sign one for the length of time required, and can I walk around this neighborhood safely? Once you have a list, you will probably have around 25-50 things to consider. Now is the time to re-read your list and make three categories: must-haves, would like to have, not necessary (but would be nice). These columns distributed by the level of need and want will help you quickly narrow down your search. With your list in hand start looking at spaces where you are considering making your home. Be brutal. If it has 4 of your must-haves but not all 7, keep looking. Does it have all your must-haves, but only a few of your like to haves? Make notes and go on to the next place. Starting your search online is a great way to eliminate places you won’t need to see in person. So, you’ve narrowed it down to a few places or your list helped you find the one place that has the things you wanted. Sign your lease, pay your deposits, and make a list of things you’ll need to do before you move. Lafayette Garden Apartments makes the top of the list when it comes to finding a great apartment. Visit them and see how many of their amenities are on your list, like 24-hour fitness centers, patios, and recreation areas including swimming pool. When you find yourself needing a place to hang your hat: should you rent or should you buy? It’s an age-old debate. Here are a few reasons to look into apartments for rent in Lafayette, La. rather than a home ownership: It’s convenient - when you rent, you pay your monthly bill and forget about everything else. There is such ease in the system. You can set up automatic monthly payments at your financial institution so you don’t have to do remember anything. If able, you can even pay several months rent at a time. You travel for pleasure or with your job - if your job or leisure activities take you away from home frequently, it’s nice to know that someone else can keep an eye on their investment. You are planning a move—you know that work will take you to a different locale or you want to experience an area for a short time. The no hassle way to live is to rent. No worry about re-sale values and most times you can afford to rent a more luxurious place than you can afford to buy. Upkeep and maintenance are not your concern - if the thought of having to pay to replace an ice maker in your refrigerator, repairing an air conditioning unit during the heat of summer, power washing the fence, and/or mowing grass instead of heading out to have some fun isn’t appealing to you, rent. Leave those headaches to the landlord or management company. Community living appeals to you - many apartment compounds have organized activities and common areas that lend to meeting interesting people. A sense of family can be established for many who are away at school and/or have no relatives in the area. You don’t like your neighbors - again, you can avoid the hassle and a confrontation and have the manager that you rent from broach the subject for you. People who don’t follow the rules of many apartment complexes must move. You are striving to repair or build credit - being a renter that pays on time in full looks great on a credit report. No property taxes - if you own a home, you pay property taxes depending on the value of the structure. As a renter, you avoid those types of taxes. Amenities—having a pool, gym, maintenance, and security on site at many complexes are benefits a renter can take advantage of without additional expense. You just prefer it—as a renter you find the living easier not having the responsibilities and stresses a home owner faces. It’s what you want and therefore right for you. Being a renter offers many benefits. If you would like to maximize the benefits of renting, check out Lafayette Gardens Apartments. Lafayette Gardens offers a beach front entrance pool, play areas, patios and/or balconies at every unit, gated community, two 24-hour fitness centers, on-site maintenance professionals, basketball court, and one, two, and three-bedroom floor plans. TAGS: lafayette louisiana ranked the happiest city to live, river ranch apartments in lafayette la, apartments near river ranch lafayette la, corporate housing near river ranch lafayette la, handicap apartments in river ranch lafayette laYou’ve made the decision to get an apartment. You know the amenities that the complex you choose must have: 24-hour gym, dog park, pool, and easy access to shops, restaurants, and work or school. What you haven’t decided is if you want your new domicile to have one or two bedrooms. Don’t ponder the situation alone. Here are three pointers for your consideration and ultimate decision making: Me, Myself, and … Are you going to live alone? You might immediately say, “Yes, it’s just me. So, a one bedroom is perfect.” While this may be true, you might want to consider your lifestyle. If you enjoy having guests visit, especially in a city like Lafayette, that has festivals almost every weekend and live music nightly, an extra bedroom might be just the convenience you need for friends and family coming to town to experience the sights and sounds with you. Do you really want your overnight guests camping out on the sofa or do you want them to enjoy the privacy of their own room? Are children a part of your life? If they are, even young children benefit from having their own space when visiting once or twice a month. Being able to keep to a bedtime schedule, especially for little ones, makes for a happier, healthier child. Can you or they truly get the rest you need when sharing sanctuary of your room instead of a room of their own? Probably not, so it might be best for everyone to have a room of their own. Consideration 1: If you truly are going to live alone, have infrequent visitors, and never have the need to provide overnight accommodations for children, a one bedroom is the way to go. Otherwise, consider a two bedroom. Hi, Ho, Hi, Ho, it’s off to work I go… Do you work or take online classes at home? Some work from home can be done at the dinner table or at a desk in the corner of the bedroom. Study after study shows that work and sleep are best kept separate. Your bedroom is where you go to rest, restore, and revitalize. Can you do that if you are also using the space to read instructional materials and work on a laptop or tablet? Probably not as successfully as if you have a two-bedroom apartment where you could set up the room as your home office. A home office affords you space and the atmosphere to conduct business or study with greater concentration and attention. If you are splitting the space of a bedroom for too many activities, it can be distracting. Consideration 2: A one bedroom is fine if you don’t work from home and are not pursuing higher education. Go with a two bedroom if your life includes a home office. These are a few of my favorite things… Most of us accumulate things. You may be a minimalist and pursue hobbies that require little by way of materials and/or equipment. You may be a shopper, sports enthusiast, collector, or hobbyist that needs extra room to house your accruements. Consideration 3: Most of us indulge in possessions that make us happy. If you can keep a one bedroom tidy and clutter free with the belongings you own, a one bedroom apartment will probably do. If you know extra space would mean being able to display more and easily access your favorite things, consider a two bedroom. Whether you opt for a one or two-bedroom apartment, Lafayette Garden Apartments is the way to go. Move-in specials are offered now. Schedule a visit today. That muscle that pumps blood throughout our body and keeps us alive is also credited with feeling the deep emotion of love. For 28 days in 2018, the heart, what most would claim as the most important organ in our body, is honored in two ways. American Heart Month and St. Valentine’s Day are celebrated in February. Each year the month is full of celebrations where the heart is the central theme. When Pope Gelasius made February 14th Saint Valentine’s Day, he put in motion a day that would become dedicated to love. American Heart Month began in 1964. The American Heart Association decided that the month could be dedicated to awareness. For over 50 years, American Heart Month raises awareness about heart health so the rate of death due to heart disease will lower. Awareness of what causes heart disease and what can be done to live a heart-healthier lifestyle has lowered the rate of death due to heart disease in the United States. According to The American Heart Association, even though statistics show that the number of heart disease-related deaths since 1964 are lower, heart disease is the still the leading cause of death for women and men in the United States. 1 in 4 deaths in America is contributed to heart disease. That statistic can change through education about heart health and by a person adopting a heart-healthy regimen as a way of life. As a leading research facility, Harvard University says that doing these five things can lead to a healthier heart: avoid tobacco, be active, aim for a healthy weight, enliven your diet, and drink alcohol in moderation or not at all. Being able to live in surroundings that offer you the opportunity to practice daily activities that lead to a healthy heart is possible. Think about your surroundings as you strive to make your heart healthier each day. Frequent non-smoking or non-tobacco using facilities. If you already smoke, find a smoking cessation class that will surround you with others who are kicking the habit and with counselors who have already quit tobacco use and are familiar with techniques to help you through this major change. The State of Louisiana offers these classes in all major cities. Activity that gets you moving is vital to a healthy heart. Exercising at a gym, walking your pet, and taking the stairs are simple ways to add some activity to your daily routine. Whether you are starting out slow because you haven’t been active for a while or adding to a lifestyle where you already workout daily, increasing activity even slightly causes results. Aiming for a healthy weight involves watching what you eat and moving your body. The best place to start to find out what a healthy weight is for your frame and height is your physician. Your doctor is familiar with your medical history and can help you set a goal to aim for the right weight for you and the proper diet to follow to get on track to maintain or reach that healthy weight range. The more colorful your plate, the more enlivened your diet will become. Vegetable, fruits, and spices come in a rainbow of colors. Surround yourself with all types of choices to add color to your diet in the produce section of your grocery store or stopping at a produce market like Fresh Pickin’s on Kaliste Saloom. Drinking alcohol in moderation means that you can still indulge. Research shows that a glass of red wine offers health benefits like the ability to improve cholesterol and fight free radical damage due to the antioxidants contained in a serving. Lafayette Garden Apartments in Lafayette, Louisiana is a premier community living facility that surrounds you with amenities that can help you practice heart-healthy living. On the grounds of the complex are two 24-hour fitness centers. Imagine working out every day at the time you want and not having to pay membership fees. It should please your senses and entice you to participate in activities surrounded by décor that comforts, inspires, and gives you a sense of well-being. Whether you are decorating your first apartment or you’ve become bored with your present décor and need a change, these ideas will help. 1) Picture This Photographs can tell your story and are appropriate for every room in your apartment. Print out photos in black and white and frame them in a signature color to scatter around a bedroom. Print random shots and make a collage by gluing them onto a huge black canvas that becomes a focal point in the living room. Hang pictures from that special dinner party or Thanksgiving in your kitchen. Photographs of you poolside or at the beach are terrific accents in the bathroom. 2) Can I Quote You? Use an inspirational quote in every room. Take hints from the things that quote conquers up in your imagination on how you should decorate. For instance, print out that famous quote from Dorothy in the Wizard of Oz, “There’s no place like home”, and put it on your nightstand. Rather than ruby slippers, a couple of red sequin accent pillows will add a splash of color and make you smile because you know what they represent. 3) Go Bananas, Go Cherries, Go Grapes, Go Whatever What’s your favorite fruit, animal, or place? Use just a touch of that ‘whatever’ in every room. One of the simplest decorative touches is to use the same theme throughout without going all out. Instead of decorating the whole room to look like Paris, an Eiffel Tower statue on the coffee table reminds you of that special place. One of the best examples of this is an apartment that had a monkey in every room. Monkey candlesticks on the dining table, monkey toothbrush holder in the bath, monkey lamp on the bedside table, Curious George book on the coffee table, you get the idea! A little touch in each room brings a sense of unity and fun overall. 4) Go Big Get that oversized chair, king size bed, exquisite antique, or table for eight and let it rule your décor. A great investment piece will be with you for a lifetime and can set the stage in your first home or forever home when it comes to the mood you want to create. Let the magnitude of your signature piece do the decorating for you. 5) Let Me Collect My… Those baseball caps, books, vacation spot t-shirts, crosses, dolls, or linens that you’ve collected for years inspire great home décor. They can become your theme when decorating one room or your entire apartment. Display them grouped together instead of letting them remain unseen taking up space in your closet. A few things to keep top of mind as you go to decorate:

How do you find the best roommate to share your living space? Utilize these tips and make your search using criteria and methods that will help you select the best potential match for your style of living. Tip #1: Ask Your Friends and Family Get the word out to your friends and family. Informing them that you are on the hunt for a roommate is a great way to find out who else they know that is out there looking for a roommate. These are people that already know your habits and lifestyle. They can help steer you in the direction of a potential 'roomie' that shares some of the same interests. Tip #2: Know What You Are Looking For You are about to make a major decision. Take the time to make a list of criteria your roommate must match. Define the things that are important to you in a living situation so you can weed through the potentials that will be headed your way soon. Be honest with yourself about what's important to you. Start with some easy choices: non-smoker or smoker, male or female, shift worker or non-shift worker...to get the ball rolling. Tip #3: Advertise Online and Places You Frequent We live in an online world and that world has websites like Roommates.com, Craigslist, Roomiematch.com, and Facebook. Take a look at these sites and post and/or advertise to find your roommate. You can create a profile or post listing your expectations and target it to your geographic area. Check websites and/or physical message centers of places you visit like your place of employment, gym, church, and alumni centers, and see if you can place an advertisement or notice there. Tip #$: Share Your Interest and Expectations in Advertisements/Posts Your potential roommate is checking you out to see if you are someone they can get along with as well. Give them some information on what you like to do and what it would be like to room with you. Discuss the types of movies you enjoy, what type of books you read, hobbies you pursue, and places you frequent. Tell them what type of housekeeper you are, what your tastes run to in decor and a quick description of your personality. Remember to keep it real and honest. Tip #5: Ensure They Can Cover Expenses It's a reality that is costs to live. Have a frank conversation with any potential roommate about monthly expenses outside of rent. Make sure to include all bills and how much their portion will be each month. Explore what their occupation is and make sure their work is steady. You don't want to have to find another roommate a few months from now because their employment was temporary. The above tips can help you consider the things you need to in the selection of your perfect roommate. Using these tips will help narrow your choice to someone with similar habits and personality traits that will make sharing living space a dream. You've found the perfect roommate; now find the perfect well-furnished apartment. Contact Lafayette Gardens Apartments and choose the best floor plan for you and your 'roomie' today! TAGS: finding the perfect college roomate to share your apartment in lafayette la, 2 bedroom apartments lafayette la, 3 bedroom apartments in lafayette laDecorating a one bedroom apartment when you are renting can seem a daunting task, especially when you are first starting out. We have come up with 3 cost effect high impact tips for college students and those just leaving the nest below: Light Wall Paints or Artwork: Most designers agree that using paint is the most cost-effective high impact change you can make. The problem is, that most universities and apartment complexes will limit what you can do with the walls. In lieu of painting, try using bright colored artwork instead. In today’s world of Hobby Lobby, Ross, Kirkland’s and the like, finding large colorful art on discount is not a difficult task. Moreover, try your hand at painting your own art. While large canvases can be expensive, a cluster of smaller canvas can easily be purchased for around $25 - $40. And Hobby Lobby’s stencil section can help those who feel they lack the creativity to pull this off freehand. Stencil on your favorite shapes and get busy painting in colors that coordinate with your furniture. Furniture for impact: Most of us grew up in traditional homes that had a living, dining, and separate bedrooms. It’s hard to shake the idea that rooms can be multipurpose. For example, in a one bedroom apartment, the dining area can double as an office for college students and for those just starting out. And while we are conditioned to think our living area needs a sofa, you may find that two roomy armchairs are more appropriate given space. Adding a cocktail table that can double as a desk and use a 5x8 area rug to boost the color of the room are just a few examples. Organize with Shelving: Open wall mounted shelving not only conserves space but gives you ample space to display artwork, treasured books and memorabilia. When artfully arrange this solution can act as a focal point and really pull a room together. Keep in mind that hanging shelves have a maximum load capacity, most apartment complexes have maintenance personnel that can assist you with finding studs in the wall, this will add stability to the shelving and for slightly heavier object placement. If you looking for a spacious one bedroom apartment in Lafayette, La make sure to add Lafayette Gardens Apartments to your tour list. When it comes to a rental apartment, the property owners carry insurance that protects them against the loss of the apartment buildings, garages, office space, common areas, fences, swimming pools and storage buildings, as well as any business personal property that is kept on the premises and used to maintain or service the buildings and grounds. But their commercial insurance does not cover contents in the rental units. What is Renters Insurance? Renters insurance provides coverage to your personal property such as furniture, electronics, clothing among other possessions. This insurance only covers your personal contents, injury you may cause to the building or someone else and as such is far more affordable. Renters Insurance cost about the same a couple going out to a movie once a month. Why is it Important? Fire, theft, flood and other hazards can devastate a household. But most important is that it ensures your assets are covered. Renters insurance covers your belongings from theft and damage, but it also provides liability coverage in case someone is injured while in your apartment. What does it cover? The damage or loss of your personal property from fire, lightning, explosion, theft, a falling object, smoke, vandalism, weight of snow or ice, riot, or damage caused by vehicles and aircrafts. Also, while your belongings while off-premise if you are traveling and lose your luggage or laptop. We should mention that wind damage is not covered. It has been excluded throughout most of Louisiana by underwriters. Liability – This section of your rental insurance will cover any accidents on the rental property caused by you or family. Living Expense - If you are displaced by flood or fire. Here, renters insurance can pay for interim lodging until the property has been restored to livable condition. A few facts about Rental Insurance in Louisiana
Also, having an insurance for the damage caused by you doesn't make you exempt from any liability. The damaged party’s insurance company can sue you for the amount they have paid to cover the loss. If you are liable, your insurance policy will defend you and pay for the losses but only up to your policy limit. When you are apartment shopping in Louisiana, renters insurance is probably the last thing on your mind, but we highly suggest you take the time to investigate this low-cost protection that most insurance offer. A few simple tasks that can further reduce consumption can apply to apartments in Lafayette are provided below. 1. Fixing Air Leaks: Studies have shown leaks around your windows and doors are responsible for 10 to 25 percent electricity waste. If you have poorly sealed windows, your heating or cooling system needs to do more work to maintain the temperature setting and this directly affects electricity consumption and expense. A simple weather stripping from a local big box store for around $6 (for 17ft) will greatly reduce leaks and your utility bill. 2. Use Energy Saving Bulbs: According to various studies by industry experts, 25% of average home energy budget goes to the light illumination. If you are using incandescent light bulbs in your home, not only do they consume more electricity but emit heat as well. This means you are using more electricity to cool your home in the summer. Using LED light bulbs can reduce electric consumption by 2/3rds and they remain cool. 3. Fix Water Leaks: Faucets or toilets leaks can wreak damage to your home and nature. While our access to fresh water is plentiful, waste of it is not deemed irresponsible and can cause an increase in your water bill. You should check all the faucets, toilets and other water sources frequently and if you notice a leak, make sure you address it right away. 4. Avoid Plastic Material: This can be a little harder to accomplish than the previous mention green living exercises. But here are few suggestions that will go a long way.
5. Utilizing Nature In Your Home: Utilizing natural light and air are excellent steps to a greener home. When living in an apartment, use blinds and curtains to keep out the heat during Summer months. During Fall and Spring, consider opening the windows and letting in the fresh air and natural light. All the above practices provided are easy to implement and when necessary cost-effective to obtain. If this is your first attempt a greener living, kudos on accepting the challenge. Don’t be overwhelmed, try implementing one or two of the suggestions a month and in little to no time you be on your way to greener living. We want to remind you of a few Summer Driving Tips provided by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) who cautions those traveling by car to think safety first to ensure a safe trip for themselves and their families. FOCUS ON SAFETY Prevention and planning may take a little time up front, but will spare you from dealing with the consequences of a break down or worse yet, a highway crash later. GET YOUR CAR SERVICED Regular maintenance such as tune-ups, oil changes, battery checks, and tire rotations go a long way toward preventing breakdowns. If your vehicle has not been serviced according to the manufacturers recommendations, schedule a preventive maintenance checkup with your mechanic right away. PROTECT YOURSELF AND YOUR LOVED ONES Buckle Up. Every Trip. Every Time. All passengers must agree to wear their seat belts every time they are riding or driving in your vehicle. Set the example by always wearing your seat belt. STAY ALERT Stop along the way to take a group stretch, get something to eat and drink, return any calls or text messages, and change drivers if you're feeling tired or drowsy. Consider staying overnight at a hotel or family resort. Resist the urge to check your phone. Keep your eyes on the road, hands on the wheel, and concentration on the task of driving. No ones lives, neither your, passengers nor any other road users are worth a phone call or text. And remember, law enforcement officers across the nation are now using innovative strategies to aggressively enforce their State distracted driving laws.
